Keniston and other American researchers explained student activism in terms of intra-individual dispositions to activism, formed by the family environment and specific child-rearing practices (interpersonal processes) (Keniston, 1965, 1968; Flacks, 1967; Inglehart, 1971, 1977; Block, 1972; Block, Haan & Smith, 1969; Haan, Smith & Block, 1968; Smith, Haan & Block, 1970). Thus, intra- or interpersonal explanations (see Billig, 1976, for a discussion of these) have been advanced for political dissent: a person becomes a political dissident because he/she is that kind of person/has a specific configuration of personality traits/has been subjected to specific child-rearing practices.
