The privilege of knowing our King and worshipping Him is given us, not for our own sakes only, but also for the sake of those who know Him not or acknowledge Him not. But does the Church indeed confess Him for its Head, and take His work in all its length and breadth as the pattern of its own work? Would it not be only too easy for strangers from afar, wise men from the East, to see in Christendom only a headless rabble, dragged hither and thither by jealousies and self-seekings, anything rather than united in the sense of a common obedience and a common labour?
This dread of newness, unlike the first, has in it nothing base. There is no wisdom, not even any solid and enduring strength when it is wholly wanting. Yet we all know how often it will lead us astray. Not to speak of the correction of manifest evils, things good may often need to be changed for better. Things good to us may often need to be taken away because they are not good to others, whose claims to be considered are stronger than ours. In these and various other ways it is often a duty to welcome change : but that is a duty which we can never understand so long as we look upon long-standing custom as the one only holy thing in the world.
